Comparison of two stories

The two stories, “The Fan Club” by Rona Maynard and “Like Mexicans” by Gary Soto, have many similarities and differences.  In both stories, decision making was something that needed to be made.  In “The Fan Club” Laura has to make the decision of either joining the in group or not.  At first she thought they were making fun of her poems.  Similarly, in “Like Mexicans”, Gary has to make the decision f marrying someone who wasn’t a Mexican but was poor.  On story had to make the decision of joining a group and the other to marry someone who was not Mexican.

Another similarity was social class.  In “The Fan Club”, Rachel was considered lower class because of her unpopularity and last name.  In “Like Mexicans”, Caroly was poor and so were the Mexicans.  In one story one was lower class because of her last name and unpopularity and in the other they were poor because of less money.

The last similarity is stereotypes.  In “The Fan Club”, Rachel had the stereotypes of the way she looked and her last name.  In the same way people in “Like Mexicans” who were not Mexicans, Asians, or Africans were know as “Oakies”.  In one story people were against her because of her last name, and in the other story, people were against them because of their racial background.  In conclusion, “The Fan Club” and “Like Mexicans” have many of the same issues in common.
