In school different genres are read and studied. This year we studied fiction, non fiction, and poetry. Throughout these stories, the author creates a theme which tells us about life in general. In the unit “The Right Choice”, the theme dealt with choices the characters made. Throughout the three genres, the overall theme is peer pressure affects one’s decisions.

The theme “peer pressure affects one’s decisions” is represented in the fictional story, “The Fan Club” by Rona Maynard.  One example for this theme is when Rachel was talked badly about, and her “so called” friend Laura doesn’t defend her.  Instead Laura joins the crowd in making fun of Racheal. Laura’s actions here prove that peer pressure affects ones decision because she    worried about how she would have gotten treated if she wouldn’t have helped the popular crowd laugh at her friend Rachel. Laura didn’t want to feel like an outsider, so she joined in the laughter against Racheal.  Another example that peer pressure affects one’s decisions is when Laura finds out that the popular kids are not plotting something against her.  She sees that they are all  laughing at Rachel so she feels that she shouldn’t do anything to stop them from talking about Rachel. The pressure probably comes from not wanting to get laughed at herself later on.  Laura also proved the theme because she didn’t want to get talked about herself, so she decided to tried to fit in with the other children and not stop the laughter.
